The Curriculum
Mass Media Careers is designed to provide aspiring filmmakers and media professionals with a comprehensive, hands-on education that prepares them for real careers in the film, television, and digital media industries. Our curriculum is being developed in collaboration with industry professionals, the California film community, and academic partners to ensure that participants receive training that reflects both current industry standards and the evolving needs of the modern media landscape. The program is structured to combine practical instruction, creative development, and professional preparation, allowing students to build the skills and confidence necessary to work on professional productions.
The curriculum will be delivered through a hybrid model that includes both in-person and virtual instruction, allowing participants to engage with instructors, mentors, and industry professionals regardless of location or schedule constraints. In-person sessions emphasize hands-on training with professional equipment, collaborative exercises, and real-world production simulations. Virtual sessions complement this work by providing lectures, workshops, industry discussions, and specialized instruction that can be accessed remotely.
Participants begin with a foundational introduction to the media production ecosystem. This phase focuses on helping students understand how the film and television industry operates as a whole, including the roles and responsibilities of different departments, the structure of production teams, and the workflow that moves a project from concept to completion. Students are introduced to professional standards, production terminology, and set etiquette, all of which are critical for working successfully on professional sets.
From there, the curriculum moves into core production disciplines. Students receive instruction in camera operation, cinematography fundamentals, lighting techniques, sound recording, and production design. Through guided exercises and supervised projects, participants learn how visual storytelling is constructed through framing, lighting, and camera movement, while also developing an understanding of how sound, environment, and visual composition work together to support narrative and emotional impact.
Another major component of the program focuses on post-production and digital workflow. Students learn the fundamentals of editing, media management, and post-production pipelines, including the use of industry-standard software and collaborative editing practices. This phase introduces participants to the technical and creative decisions that shape the final version of a film or media project, including pacing, structure, and the integration of sound and visual elements.
Professional development and workforce preparation are integrated throughout the program. Participants learn about the expectations of professional production environments, including teamwork, communication, time management, and problem-solving under real production conditions. Students are also introduced to career pathways within the industry, gaining insight into both creative and technical roles that exist across film, television, streaming content, and emerging digital platforms.
Mass Media Careers also places a strong emphasis on industry exposure and mentorship. Guest speakers, working professionals, and partner organizations contribute to workshops and discussions that provide students with direct insight into the realities of the media industry. These interactions help bridge the gap between training and employment by giving participants the opportunity to learn from professionals who are actively working in the field.
The program culminates in collaborative production projects that allow students to apply what they have learned in a practical setting. Participants work in teams to develop, produce, and complete media projects, gaining experience with the entire production process while building a portfolio of work that can support their next steps in the industry.
Through this comprehensive curriculum, Mass Media Careers seeks to prepare participants not only to understand the craft of media production, but to enter the industry as capable, confident professionals ready to contribute to the next generation of storytelling.
